I AM, the Power Behind These Words
As I’ve been reflecting during Lent on the power behind the words, I AM. I’ve found myself asking, why did Jesus choose the words’ I AM”?
Do you remember when Moses was on the mountain and encountered the burning bush and asked God, “Who should I say sent me?”
God answered, “I AM.” (Exodus 3:14)
Not “I was.”
Not “I will be.”
Simply, I AM.
This meant that God is past, present, and future. He goes before us, stands with us, and remains after us. His presence is constant, unchanging, and faithful. That name, “ I AM” was more than a title; it was identity, authority, and covenant. So when Jesus spoke to the crowds and declared, “I AM…”, the people understood the importance of those words. I AM was a divine claim.
He was saying, “The Father and I are one.”
This truth is the foundation for every statement that follows:
- I am the Bread of Life.
- I am the Light of the World.
- I am the Good Shepherd.
- I am the Resurrection
- I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
- I am the Vine
My prayer is that you review these truths, they will enhance your personal walk towards Easter. May you experience the living, present, eternal I AM in a new and personal way.
Lets Go Deeper
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” — John 6:35 (NKJV)
How often do I try to find fulfillment when I feel empty, in things like food, distractions, or busyness, and still find myself hungry? Jesus says, “Never hunger.” Not just less hungry, but never. That promise is worth pausing to consider.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” — John 8:12 (NKJV)
After Jesus called Himself the light of the world, I remember that light doesn’t argue with darkness; it just shines. I don’t need to see the whole road ahead, just the next step. He will handle the rest.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” — John 10:11 (NKJV)
As our Good Shepherd, He doesn’t watch from afar; He walks with us, knows us, and gives His life for us. At times, I need to slow down and listen for His voice above the noise.
“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” John 1. He spoke these words while standing in front of a tomb. Before the miracle, before the stone was moved, He said, “I AM the resurrection.” This is a reassurance of His constant presence.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6 (NKJV)
In a world where everything seems to shift, what is true one day is questioned the next, Jesus says, “I am the way. I am the truth.” Not just a suggestion, but an anchor. My part is to keep choosing to trust, even when I cannot see where the road leads.
“I am the vine, you are the branches… for without Me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NKJV)
When things aren’t working, I push and strive; I try harder. But fruit doesn’t come from effort; it comes from connection. To abide is what He asks: just hold on.
